December Book Review

In 2018 I read 29 books! For some this is a drop in the bucket but for me it is a huge number. There were years between my 20’s and 40’s when zero books were read and I’m so glad to find a love for books again.

Surprisingly I only picked up five non fiction reads in 2018 with Girl Wash Your Face being on the top of my list. I’ve already grabbed several and have a big list of non fiction on my list for 2019.

I rounded out the year with lots of fiction and one great devotional and wanted to be sure to share those with my friends! Keep reading to see what I loved (or just liked) about each!

Typically I share the Amazon review as well as my thoughts but for this one I just want to say if you are looking for an easy daily devotional that is sure to make you think but also giggle I highly recommend. I have loved all of Melanie’s books but this one I feel I will pick up and read over and over for a little inspiration. I did download on my kindle which you can grab for just $2.99 right now but I honestly wish I had the hardback book. I would have highlighted it like crazy!

Amazon: When New Yorker Rachel Chu agrees to spend the summer in Singapore with her boyfriend, Nicholas Young, she envisions a humble family home and quality time with the man she hopes to marry. But Nick has failed to give his girlfriend a few key details. One, that his childhood home looks like a palace; two, that he grew up riding in more private planes than cars; and three, that he just happens to be the country’s most eligible bachelor.

My thoughts: I was a little late to the game reading this one but when movie reviews started coming out and everyone was loving it, I knew I wanted to read the book first. I didn’t hate this book but it wasn’t a page turner for me. For whatever reason it took me forever and a day to read. I haven’t watched the movie yet but I have a feeling this is one of those books that makes a much better movie than a read. I think I just had such a hard time keeping up with the characters.

Amazon: It’s the eve of Rachel Chu’s wedding, and she should be over the moon. She has a flawless Asscher-cut diamond, a wedding dress she loves, and a fiancé willing to thwart his meddling relatives and give up one of the biggest fortunes in Asia in order to marry her. Still, Rachel mourns the fact that her birthfather, a man she never knew, won’t be there to walk her down the aisle.  Then a chance accident reveals his identity.

My thoughts: So why then did I read book 2? I guess I’m not a quitter! By the time I finished book 1, I really loved Rachel and Nicholas and really wanted to see how things played out. This book was a bit more entertaining to me but again just took so long for me to read for some reason. After this read I took a break and haven’t made it back to book 3 yet.

Amazon: Marnie MacGraw wants an ordinary life—a husband, kids, and a minivan in the suburbs. Now that she’s marrying the man of her dreams, she’s sure this is the life she’ll get. Then Marnie meets Blix Holliday, her fiancé’s irascible matchmaking great-aunt who’s dying, and everything changes—just as Blix told her it would.

My thoughts: In early December, Amazon ran a Kindle unlimited 3 month deal for just 99 cents. Last spring I have used Kindle unlimited before but cancelled during a little reading hiatus. This book was one of two I grabbed after Christmas and I’m so glad I did. It’s a sweet little story and it was an easy read with just enough action to keep me interested and enough love to keep me smiling at the ending.

Amazon: Lowen Ashleigh is a struggling writer on the brink of financial ruin when she accepts the job offer of a lifetime. Jeremy Crawford, husband of bestselling author Verity Crawford, has hired Lowen to complete the remaining books in a successful series his injured wife is unable to finish.

My thoughts: I seriously could not put this book down! It was a little psycho and the ending leaves you wondering if you identified the right crazy person. If you like reads that are a little demented but not so much you will have nightmares, this read will keep you on the edge of your seat anticipating the ending. Verity can also be read for free with Kindle unlimited. Note…it does have some mature and graphic content.
