Between the Lines- March Book Review

Happy Wednesday!  I’m super excited to be taking a break from what I’m wearing to share a little about what I’m reading as I co-host with my friend Stephanie to share What We’re Reading Wednesday.  This month I’m dishing on two recent reads so follow along to see if they are up your alley.

All Those Things We Never Said

Amazon: Days before her wedding, Julia Walsh is blindsided twice: once by the sudden death of her estranged father…and again when he appears on her doorstep after his funeral, ready to make amends, right his past mistakes, and prevent her from making new ones.  Surprised, to say the least, Julia reluctantly agrees to turn what should have been her honeymoon into a spontaneous road trip with her father to make up for lost time. But when an astonishing secret is revealed about a past relationship, their trip becomes a whirlwind journey of rediscovery that takes them from Montreal to Paris to Berlin and back home again, where Julia learns that even the smallest gestures she might have taken for granted have the power to change her life forever.

My thoughts:  So maybe it’s just the realist in me but I don’t do make believe very well.  While the overall idea of this book – father and daughter reuniting and mending a relationship – was a good read if somewhat predictable. The fact that it was free on kindle unlimited was a plus but if I’m being honest it was not a page turner for me.

Girl, Wash Your Face

Amazon:  Each chapter of Girl, Wash Your Face begins with a specific lie Hollis once believed that left her feeling overwhelmed, unworthy, or ready to give up. As a working mother, a former foster parent, and a woman who has dealt with insecurities about her body and relationships, she speaks with the insight and kindness of a BFF, helping women unpack the limiting mind-sets that destroy their self-confidence and keep them from moving forward.  From her temporary obsession with marrying Matt Damon to a daydream involving hypnotic iguanas to her son’s request that she buy a necklace to “be like the other moms,” Hollis holds nothing back. With unflinching faith and tenacity, Hollis spurs other women to live with passion and hustle and to awaken their slumbering goals.

My thoughts:  If you have ever told lies to yourself and found yourself trapped by fear or insecurity or just feeling numb, BUY THIS BOOK!  I seriously found myself laughing and crying and taking so damn many notes!  I literally think I even discovered a few things about myself and why I might still struggle in a few areas.  It was very, very hard for me to believe Rachel Hollis could only be 34 because she is SO WISE!  If you can’t tell, I give this book 5 BIG ass stars. Here is just one of an entire page of my favorite quotes from the book.  Yes to all of this!

“You, and only you, are ultimately responsible for who you become and how happy you are. Understanding you are in control is so important but you also need to identify and systematically destroy every lie you’ve told yourself your whole life.”  – Rachel Hollis

Stephanie, host of What We’re Reading Wednesday and blogger at Wife Mommy Me talks books, too:
1) What’s the first book you can remember reading? I had to really think about this but after much memory searching, I think the first book I read by myself, to myself was “Where the Red Fern Grows”. When thinking back, I remember sitting under my comfortable way past bedtime using a flashlight to finish the book. I’ve always had this type of binge feast with books.

2) What is your favorite book made to movie film and why? Hands down, Me Before You. If you are a reader of my blog, this comes as no surprise. Bottom line, I love all things Jojo.

3) Share 3 books you currently sitting on your “to read” bookshelf? Just 3? My stack is mighty high these days. I am currently working through Girl, Wash Your Face and plan to read Her Last Goodbye and Now That You Mention It. I’m 6 books behind in my reading challenge so I really hope to get some ready done this Spring.

Whitney from Polka Dotty Place talks her love of reading from a young age:

1) What’s the first book you can remember reading? The first book I remember reading on my own was a picture book about The Titanic. I checked it out again and again from my school library. I have always loved learning about that giant ship. I got to go to The Titanic Museum in Las Vegas a couple of years ago. It was amazing!!

2) What is your favorite book made to movie film and why? My favorite book that has been made into a movie is Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. I read it a million times growing up and it’s still a favorite. I prefer the older version with Gene Wilder and can’t wait to read the Roald Dahl book with my kids.

3) Share 3 books you currently sitting on your “to read” bookshelf? I am looking forward to reading: Never Unfriended by Lisa-Jo Baker, Bringing Up Girls by Dr James Dobson & Wins, Losses & Lessons by Lou Holtz
