All About Hair - My fave products and tips

Full disclosure friends, I struggle with my hair every …single….day!  When it comes to hair and makeup, I’m definitely in the low maintenance category as in, I don’t like to spend a lot of time. However, I will then complain incessantly about how my hair looks like crap and my makeup doesn’t stay on my face!  Soooo….I’ve been really trying harder to make some improvements and changes that will consistently provide a better outcome.

After my recent bathroom refresh, my hair products have been more readily available at my fingertips and I’m working to try what I have.  My hair is super fine which can cause it to look really thin if I’m not using a product that works well.  I also have a slight wave to my hair which means it definitely requires a little blowdrying if I want it to cooperate.  Today I’m sharing a few products and tools which do work for me as well as some tips I’ve found from some of my favorite bloggers.

Fave Hair Products & Tools

Thickening Spray | This product seems to work the best at giving my hair volume and most recently I’ve been using Kristin Ess Thickening Spray and I think my favorite thing about it is the smell but it also works to add some texture to my hair without weighing it down or making it greasy.

Root Lifter | I’ve also tried root lifter and have been using Big Sexy Hair Root Pump Plus for some time but not sure if I was using it necessarily correctly or regularly.  Since watching a video recently on blow drying my hair (see tips I love below) I’ve pulled it from the cabinet and started using again and I can definitely tell the difference.  I have Aquage Uplifting Foam in my “save for later” cart to try once I run out of the current product as I’ve seen some great reviews.

Heat Protectant | This is a product I struggle with.  I know I need to be using one but having find hair creates a challenge as I definitely do not want a product which leaves any sort of residue on my hair.  I found quickly after using a Matrix option it was not for me.  My fine hair felt as if I had added something sticky right on top and it really just made me feel like my hair was dirty.  I found this recent list of 15 Best Heat Protectants and I’m thinking I’ll start with one of the cheaper options and work my way up.  Hoping one of you readers with fine hair might have a great suggestion too!

Hairspray | I have been using Kenra 25 for several years and I’ve only gone back to my second favorite, Big Sexy Hair, once when it was on sale.  My hairdresser uses Kenra and the only complaint I have ever had is sometimes the nozzle gets plugged.  Recently I did try the Kenra 13 which is a lighter hold and I liked it too but have gone back to the 25.

Brushes | Wet Brush Pro Detangle Hair Brush really did change my life.  Ha!  But seriously I do love using this brush for myself and Carly Jo.  But, did you know there is also a Wet Brush Speed Dry option?  I totally did not until recently and I’ve grabbed one to try.  The round brush is great for adding volume once my hair is almost dry but for both Carly and myself, the round brush can hurt if we use it when our hair is still too wet.  I also use a teasing brush to create more volume at my crown.

Curling Iron | I’m a traditional curling iron kind of girl.  Typically I use my chi flat iron the first day I wash and dry my hair and only use the curling iron for the ends.  On the day(s) following I have been using a Hot Tools curling iron but was getting so frustrated because my curls were not holding.  Last week I finally decided to try a smaller size and I’ve been super excited with the results!  The new curling iron I purchased is the Hot Tools Professional 1-1/4″.

Hair Dryer | Not all hair dryers are created equal and this is especially true depending on your hair type.  Even my boys complain about the old hairdryer and they both end up in my bathroom.  I grabbed this BaBylissPRO Ceramix Xtreme Dryer on recommendation from my stylist and it is a reasonably priced upgrade that has worked for me.

Dry Shampoo | For those days….and I mean days in between washing, I love my dry shampoo!  I’m not sure what any of us did before this little invention.  I’ve tried so many and had decent results with all but I’ve settled on the Batiste Dry Shampoo and for the price I feel confident in saying it is the best choice.  It adds just enough texture without weighing down my hair.  I’ve been ordering this 3 pack which has lasted us about 4 months between 3 of us.

Tips I Love!

If you don’t already follow but you love to follow girls with good hair, Kate from The Small Things Blog should be on your list.  Like if I could walk in and order hair for myself hers would be the exact hair I’d order!    I literally have one of her pictures pinned from the very first year I ever had Pinterest.  She has tons of great tutorials and the latest I really loved was all about blow drying mistakes.  I’ve implemented a few and seen some definitely improvement.

The second is Brighton Keller who I’ve shared before because her tips on using dry shampoo for lots of volume but I also love her round brush tutorial.  Brighton is just overall fun and always has great hair!
