5 Tips to Transition Your Spring Closet

·

Now that Mother Nature has finally decided it is in fact spring, most of us are ready to transition to spring attire and ditch the winter wardrobe.  Here in Texas things heat up rather quickly and I spent some time a few weeks back rearranging my closet to create more accessible pieces for the current season.  Today I’m joining Erika and Shay to share a few tips on how I transition my closet to spring!

Five Tips to Transition Your Spring Closet #organization

One

Purge!  I know, I know why is everyone always trying to make you get rid of your stuff?! If there were items you didn’t love from the past season do not waste real estate in your closet hanging onto them for another 6 months!  Make a purge pile as you begin the transition.

Two

Move least used items to the least accessible spots so all your spring items can be front and center.  I do not have the luxury of having a huge closet.  Don’t get me wrong my closet is bigger than many, but ideally having a super high rack to move all the winter clothes would be ideal.  Instead, I utilize the shelves to move items like sweaters and scarves.  They are now neatly folded and still accessible if we happen to have a cool Texas evening.

I also have so many booties and tall boots I love but won’t be touched for quite some time so I utilize clear boxes from the Container Store to store them on the upper shelves up and out of the way.  PaThis year I also found a great solution for my tall boots by storing them on a shelf with enough space to hang my shorts above.  You would have thought I won the lottery with this change I was so excited.

The winter items which remain on hangers are then moved to a small section in one corner of my closet and heavier coats relocated to our coat closet.

Three

Pair like items together in an order that makes sense to you.  While I love to keep my clothes in color order, I also function better if I can see the different items in groups.  For instance, I hang long sleeve tops in color order followed by short sleeve tops and then tanks.  I’ve tried mixing these all together and next thing you know the season has passed and I’m finding a tank I love that I totally forgot to wear because I could not see it smushed in with the rest. I also separate dresses, pants and skirts into their own section.

Four

Now you can easily see what you have for spring and summer and can easily take stock and decide what you might need/want (no judgment here) to add.  Are there colors you love but you don’t see?  For me yellow and pink have been two colors I know I love but I was not seeing any in my closet.

Five

Turn your hangers around!  So say there is an item you are just not ready to part with and you love it but just have not worn it as much as you do other items.  Turn that hanger around backwards as you transition.  In September when you begin to rotate to a fall wardrobe if that hanger is still backwards it makes the decision to purge easier.

Bonus Tip(s)

The biggest tip, if you really need to come up with the best solution for your closet, remove EVERYTHING and evaluate your space!  While you are at it replace all those mismatched hangers with slimline hangers and you will thank me later. Seriously the biggest game changer.

I hope this gives you a little inspiration to create a spring closet to work best for you!  Having my clothes organized makes getting dressed in the morning so much easier.
