I have never been one of those girls who is great at using makeup. I have always worn makeup but I don’t always feel like I do a very good job with it. As I’ve gotten older my skin has continued to get more and more dry and it seems like makeup just does not stay on my face for very long at all during the day. During the months when I’ve got a little more color it doesn’t bother me as much but the fall and winter months I often just feel blah. Here are few items I added the past few months that have really helped.
So here is the blank canvas. Oh my goodness! Maybe someday I’ll figure out how to take a selfie that does not make my features distorted! As you can see my skin isn’t too bad but I deal with dark circles and some “wisdom” spots here and there. Lots and lots of time in the sun back in the baby oil and vanilla days will do that to you.
After applying my daily toner and moisturizer with spf (I use Rodan & Fields), I typically apply cover up under my eyes. The Pioneer Woman mentioned this cover girl cover up about 6 months or so ago and I remembered it from way back in the day. It is cheap and works as good as any so I have gone back to the cover up I probably used in the late 80’s.

Foundation primer was a new thing for me. I just didn’t think it was necessary but decided to give it another shot. My main issue is my foundation not staying on my face for an extended period and my face feeling so dry. I consulted with a rep at Ulta and she recommended this one. So far I am really liking it. It is very light and a little goes a long way.

My older daughter is so much better at putting on makeup than me and she informed me it is much better to use a brush for foundation. All these years I’ve been using either my fingers or a sponge….who knew? When I picked up the primer I was out of foundation so I added this bare minerals foundation and purchased a new brush. I have always heard a lot about Bare Minerals but until recently, from what I understand, it was suited more for oilier skin. This one, however, has been perfect for me. It isn’t too heavy but also provides enough coverage.

I add a little to the brush and apply in circular motions.

This is obviously not new but I also love the Urban Decay Naked eye shadow line…..clearly some shades more than others!

And I received Benefit mascara in my monthly Birchbox and have used nothing else since. If you aren’t a Birchbox fan already you can check it out here. Please note if you sign up through this link I would receive points.

The last item I have recently added is finishing spray. I have to tell you this one still boggles my mind but it is working so I have to share. I asked the Ulta consultant about finishing spray as well as I read it was great for helping makeup stay put. She noted a more expensive brand but then took me to the one she uses. This one was like $7 y’all so I had to give it a whirl. It took me awhile to get use to using it but now I am hooked. Somehow spraying something wet on the dry makeup I just put on seems weird. The fact that my makeup is not coming of all over my iPhone, however, is really cool.
Here is the “after” picture!
And the after, after once I fixed my hair and was completely ready for the day!
If you love makeup but dislike the actual shopping for makeup, my friend Emily at Ember Grey Blog discussed Loxa Beauty on her blog this week and it definitely sounds like something I might check out. If nothing else I am definitely ordering the lipstick…color is killer!
