Reading Lately – September Book Review

It’s time to review what I’ve been reading lately! As I pulled this together, I realized there was a little theme with my favorites. Apparently I’m really into love stories with a little unresolved trauma lately! Seriously, I wholeheartedly loved 4 of these books and liked 1 okay so ready along to see my September book review.

I picked up Finley Donovan is Killing It after seeing somoeone elses review. This book started off strong for me but then it just kind of drug along. I honestly loved Finley’s character up front and thought I was really going too speed through to the ending but it just didn’t do if for me. This book is free with Kindle Unlimited right now so you may want to snag it and see if it’s a better fit for you.

Y’all, Pack Up the Moon wrecked me at the end. Even though you know the entire book that the wife has died, the ending really had me in tears. Trigger warning if you are newly greiving and this might not be the best fit. The story flips back and forth between the wife who died as she moves through her terminal illness and the widowed husband reading a letter each month she left him with an action to accomplish. This sweet story of love and loss and then love again was so touching to me.

The Happy Ever After Playlist was another favorite for me. Of course the author definitely had me when one of the main characters ended up being a dog! This couples love story came together and then unraveled. I loved that Sloane risk love again after a major heartbreak and begin to pull her life back together. Bonus, you can find the actual Happy Ever After Playlist on Spotify!

Another book on love and heartbreaking loss and working through unresolved feelings. The Unsinkable Greta James walks with a father and daughter who are both grieving the loss of the wife/mother who was the equalizer in their family. I’ve been on a huge mission the last few years of undoing some of the childhood stories I “made up” to really uncover the assumptions I may have made versus the love my parents really intended. This book was relateable and I couldn’t quit turning the pages.

I picked up this book in a little bookstore on my trip to Lake Tahoe as I thought it would be perfect to read on our beach day. Spoiler alert, there is hardly any time spend on the beach in this book. Thankfully, it wasn’t needed to create a story I was completely invested in immediately. Another loss, some family trauma to work through and a sweet love story. I read this book in 48 hours and did not get out of bed until I finished it last Sunday! This was the 3rd Emily Henry book for me and I think it might be my favorite!

Currently I’m trying to make my way through Hotel Nantucket and it is a slow start for me. Hoping it gets better soon! What are you reading that I need to add to my list?
