Friday Favorites – Austin

· ·
Yay for long weekends away from the real world!  It’s Friday and I’m curled up in a hotel room with nowhere I have to be.   Since we are spending the weekend in Austin I thought I would share some favorite things to do when visiting the city!

ONE

Austin
Visit the Texas State Capitol to learn a little about Texas history.  The architecture is beautiful.  We really wanted to take a Segway tour around downtown but Carly was too little but it would be a great way to see downtown.  Stop by the Bullock Museum to really get the full story of Texas. If that isn’t enough history, the LBJ Presidential Library and the University of Texas campus are near downtown.  I visited both the summer before my senior year of high school on a campus visit when I was still convinced I wanted to be a Longhorn.

TWO

Austin

Seeing the bats at sunset fly from under the Congress Avenue bridge is evidently something to see.  As many times as I’ve come to Austin I haven’t yet done this but if I did I’m thinking taking this kayak tour would be the thing to do!  You can read all about the history of the bats here.

THREE

Austin

Lots of great spring fed swimming holes in the Austin area such as Barton Springs and Hamilton Pool. Krause Springs is actually where we are hoping to go after picking up the kids from camp this weekend. The only real family vacation I ever went on as a child we happened upon Krause Springs and it’s the best time I can ever remember having with my family.  It has changed a lot since then and definitely more commercialized but hoping to make some fun family memories.

FOUR

Austin

We typically choose to stay somewhere somewhat central to anything we might like to do.  We are trying out the Lone Star Court which offers live music some nights and is close to the Domain for shopping and dining options.  Top Golf is very close and we are going to try it with the kids this year.   I am dying to try iFly Austin but so far Dillon is the only willing participant I have been able to convince.

FIVE

It’s Texas and there are really only two great choices to make for food.  It’s either going to be bar-b-que or Mexican!
Austin

If you don’t mind a little drive, the Salt Lick is worth it!  Served family style and no finger will go unlicked!  Tacos are one of my very favorite things and this article by Texas Monthly outlines the 16 Great Tacos in Austin!  More than likely one meal will be at Gloria’s Latin Cuisine as it is comparable to Mexican food but in the Domain area and easy to access from our hotel and so yummy!

Who knows what our weekend will actually look like!  When we pick the kids up from a week at camp they are typically so tired they just want to chill.  Combine that with the fact that I’m just realizing I didn’t even think twice about packing them some clean clothes for the remainder of the weekend….mom fail.  Oops…good thing I’m meeting a friend for some shopping today I guess.

Have a great one friends and be sure to hop over to my contact page and see where I’m linking up!
